City to remove all taxi backseat screens

SHANGHAI traffic authorities have ordered Blue Union Taxi Company to remove backseat ad screens installed on its 2,000 cars by iTaxi Media because the screens failed to meet the national safety standard.

They also asked other taxi operators to take off ad screens when their contracts with Touchmedia expire. The move came after several passengers got hurt in a sudden braking or crash incident with their head smashed against the screen.

The Shanghai Transport and Port Administration also ordered Dazhong, Qiangsheng, Haibo and Jinjiang, major taxi operators in the city, to stop installing new screens from Touchmedia before their contracts expire and to stop renewing their contacts.

Touchmedia should also put a buffer frame around its ad screens to ensure passenger safety before the date of May 20, the administration said.

A month ago, a young woman suffered severe head injuries after hitting the screen during an accident. A man died after hitting the screen in a crash last year.
