City unveils traffic plan to cope with Expo crowd
SHANGHAI traffic authority this morning published a detailed plan of traffic arrangement during the Expo, which will be held between May 1 and October 31.
The daily visitor volume is expected to reach 600,000 on average, higher than the previous estimation of 400,000. About 90 percent of them will reach the site via public transportations, said officials with city's urban and rural construction and transport commission which drafted this plan.
Visitors will be able to get to the Expo site, located both in Pudong and Puxi, within 90 minutes via buses and subways, the officials said.
The city's traffic will face "extreme pressure" in September and October, officials and traffic experts said.
They advised drivers to leave cars at home and take public transportation system instead, saying no parking lot for private cars will be set around the 7-kilometer-square controlled areas around the Expo site.
Authorities also released two reserved proposals to cut the use of private and official cars on certain days according to their license plate numbers.
The plan's Chinese version has been put online (www.eastday.com) for public opinion.
