City's first double-deck tunnel opens tonight

SHANGHAI'S first double-deck tunnel under the Huangpu River is expected to open to traffic tonight.

The south line of Shangzhong Road Tunnel, which enables the Middle Ring Road to link with Pudong New Area, will open at 8pm on a trial basis, according to Dai Xianming, a project manager at Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co Ltd.

Both the upper and lower decks of the tunnel, the widest in the city with a diameter of 14.57 meters, were designed for vehicles. The height of each deck is more than 4.5 meters, while each driving lane is 3.75 meters in width, the company's Ding Zhicheng said.

The tunnel's speed limit is 80 kilometers/hour while all other tunnels and bridges crossing the Huangpu River in the city have 60km/h speed limit.

The tunnel was built by a 3,600-ton shield, which was once the biggest such machine in the world.
