City's matchmaking event reduced to once a year

SHANGHAI’S biggest matchmaking gathering is being scaled back to one event per year and capacity cut in the wake of the New Year’s Eve Bund tragedy.

Organizers say it is now more difficult to get permission to host large-scale gatherings following the crush on the Bund in which 36 people died.

Security costs are also thought to be a factor.

The two-day event will return to Qingpu District after being held at the World Expo Park more recently, the Shanghai Matchmaking Association said yesterday.

The Qingpu site is bigger, lowering risks with crowds, said Zhou Juemin, director of the association.

The number of attendees will be limited to between 8,000 to 10,000 a day.

“It is difficult to get the approval of hosting such a big event now and we also face huge pressure in security every time when we hosted the event,” Zhou said.

She said she had considered cancelling the event, but parents, anxious to find potential marriage partners for their offspring, persuaded her not to.

The event, known as the Shanghai Love and Marriage Fair and nicknamed “the 10,000-person matchmaking event,”  was first held in 2011.

It had been held twice a year since 2012.
