Clouds to block view of Lantern Festival moon

Shanghai residents may miss the first full moon of the Lunar New Year, celebrated as the Lantern Festival, because of cloudy skies.
However, a break in clouds, described by poets as “clouds chasing the moon,” may bring momentary cheer.
Fu Yi, a chief service officer at the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, told Shanghai Daily that there was a possibility that the moon could be visible at some point of time.
However, the Year of the Horse’s first perfectly round full moon will only occur at 7:53am on Saturday, Xinhua news agency reported. Starting this year, the full moon is expected on the 16th day of the first lunar month for the next three years.
According to scientific prediction, there will be 1,241 full moons between 2001 and 2100, Xinhua said.
The full moon will be seen 579 times on the 16th day of every lunar month. The number of times it will fall on the 15th day is 468 and 188 times on the 17th day. There will be only six full moons on the 14th day.
The mercury will linger between 3 and 10 degrees under cloud cover today, local forecasters said.
Skies are expected to turn overcast at the weekend with the high climbing to 10 degrees and lows ranging between 3 and 6 degrees. Rains will be back on Sunday.
A humid rainy start is expected next week. Monday’s high will reach 13 degrees but will drop to 9 on Tuesday, while the low will fall from 9 to 6.
