Cold, dry start to the weekend

TODAY will be cold, cloudy and dry due to the prevailing band of high pressure, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said yesterday.

The mercury is set to drop below zero Celsius in the morning, while the high is unlikely to climb beyond 6 degrees.

The city’s air quality will continue to be poor today, with the air quality index expected to be between 130 and 155 in the morning, before rising to between 175 and 195 in the afternoon.

PM2.5 particles will be the main pollutant, much of which was blown into the city on westerly winds, said the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

Tomorrow will remain cloudy, with the mercury ranging between zero and 6 degrees. Monday will be clear with a high of 12 degrees, while Tuesday will be cloudy with a high of 14.

Chongming County was the coldest place in the city yesterday, as the mercury plunged to minus 4 degrees.

Readings of minus 2 and 3 were also taken in the Pudong New Area and the districts of Songjiang, Qingpu, Baoshan, Fengxian, Jinshan and Minhang.
