Cold front from north to push mercury down

STRONG winds brought by Typhoon Vongfong will ensure a cleaner weather today but the air quality is expected to turn worse tomorrow, forecasters said yesterday.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) will range between 75 and 95 in the morning and between 65 and 85 in the afternoon, according to Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

The mercury will drop today because of a cold front from the north, bringing with it airborne particles to the city, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said. Pollutants accumulate in the air for a short time, but good dispersing conditions can help clear the air, said Man Liping, a chief service officer at the meteorological bureau.

But the dispersing conditions will worsen tomorrow and last until Thursday. A light haze is expected around that time, Man said.

The environmental monitoring center also said that after the typhoon heads to northeast tomorrow, the level of air pollution will also go up.

Cloudy to sunny skies will hover over the city this week but the cold front will also bring down the temperature. Strong winds started hitting the city yesterday afternoon and will continue today under the joint influence of Typhoon Vongfong and the cold front, the bureau said.

Gales will weaken tonight, it said.

The bureau issued a blue alert for gales, the lowest level in a four-tier warning system, at 2:40pm yesterday, warning the strong winds will continue in the morning.

The temperature will drop to a high of 21 degrees Celsius and a low of 17 degrees today. It will drop to 15 tomorrow and dip to 14 on Wednesday.

Tomorrow and Wednesday should be sunny to cloudy.

The mercury will be even lower in suburban districts and county. It will be warmer on Thursday and Friday with the mercury rebounding to a low of 16 degrees and a high of 24 degrees on a cloudy Thursday.
