Construction of tram lines under way

CONSTRUCTION of a tram line in Songjiang District that is scheduled to go into operation in 2017 is under way, its developer said yesterday.

“Workers have begun digging foundations and pilings for a section of the track between Wenhui and Meijiabang roads for T2, one of the two model tram lines in Songjiang,” said 4th Engineering Co, an enterprise under the China Railway 22 Bureau Group.

The city government has approved two routes — T1 and T2 — as model lines out of six to be built in the district. They will both link with Metro Line 9.

T1, which will have 25 stations, will run from Xinsongjiang Road to Xinqiao. The first phase of T2, with 19 stations, will run from Sanxin Road N. to Rongle Road E.

The trams themselves will be painted in a light yellow color, like a silkworm, as a nod to Songjiang’s links to the spinning industry.
