Cool conditions today, followed by sunny spell

WHILE cool weather is forecast for today, it will warm up a little during the week as sunny weather returns, forecasters said yesterday.

Today, the city’s weather will still be affected by a weak cold front, bringing growing northerly winds. The low is likely to be around 10 degrees Celsius in downtown and lower in suburban districts, while the high will be around 16 degrees, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

Slight smog is predicted this morning, though this should disperse in the afternoon, said the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

From tomorrow through Thursday, a high pressure front will dominate the city weather bringing sunny spells and highs touching 18 degrees. The low will remain around 10 degrees.

The dry spell is set to end on Friday, as showers are forecast. But the rain won’t bring temperatures down, with the high hovering around 19 degrees and the low up to 14 degrees.

Despite climbing temperatures, solar term xiaoxue, minor snow, falls on Saturday, in tradition marking the start of chilly weather and snow.

However, in Shanghai winter is still a little while off, generally not officially arriving until early December.

Winter officially starts in the city when there are five consecutive days with a daily average temperature below 10 degrees following lidong — start of winter — solar term in early November.
