Crackdown on Spring Festival transport touts

SHANGHAI railway police are making new efforts, including offering cash to people who provide valuable tips, to crack down on ticket touting during the upcoming Spring Festival transport peak.

Railway police are encouraging people to report information to help them track down ticket touts, and have promised cash will be paid if the tips prove useful. The level of reward will be set on a case-to-case basis.

Police seized 557 touts last year in crackdowns on the 2008 Spring Festival transport peak and other busy travel times around national holidays. About 2,570 tickets were confiscated, with a total value of 374,000 yuan (US$54,811).

A team of 160 police investigators have been sent to Shanghai railway stations and those in neighboring provinces to crack down on scalping. They will coordinate with transport police on regional railway lines.

The crackdown will last until the end of the Spring Festival transport peak, which begins on January 11 and lasts about 40 days.

Illegal ticket dealing makes it harder for ordinary travelers to get tickets during peak transport times.
