Crash kills 4 on expressway
AT least four people died and another 38 were injured in a traffic accident in which a bus full of tourists crashed with a heavy truck on an expressway in suburban Jinshan District during yesterday morning's foggy weather.
The bus driver and three passengers onboard died at the scene, said city government.
"I was scared almost to death," said a passenger, surnamed Liu, 57.
Liu, who has been kept in hospital, suffered broken legs after her legs were crushed while sitting in the third row on the bus.
Two people suffered serious injuries while the rest suffered cuts and scratches, said Jinshan Hospital which took care of the injured.
The tourists, most of whom are middle-aged and elderly, were taking the bus to neighboring Zhejiang Province's Hengdian, a tourism site which is often used as?a?setting for movies, for a three-day trip.
The accident happened on the G15?Expressway at 8.10am when the bus, heading west, hit the rear of a truck trailer. The trailer then hit the rear of °?another truck in front, investigators explained.
The front of the bus received the most damage with the front rows and the driver's seat badly crushed.
Part of the G15 was closed yesterday morning because of the heavy fog. Visibility in some area was less than 100 meters.
The accident occurred in a section that had not been closed, but still saw patches of mist.
Passengers said their travel agency, Shanghai Xindalu Travel Service had promised to cover all medical costs. Further compensation is still being discussed and a decision will be reached once the crash investigation has concluded.
A fatal accident also happened on the G15 Expressway in late September when five people in a car were killed after the car hit a truck.
