A TRUCK driver has been subject to criminal detention for involving in a fatal accident in which a bus conductor was killed, local police said.

Police are still investigating but said the truck was overloaded, making it hard to stop in time.

The driver, surnamed Wang, from central China's Henan Province, was driving the vehicle with 12 large steel tubes onboard when it hit a bus from the rear on August 18 in Fengxian District's Puxing Highway.

The conductor, Shen Cuihong, was killed and four passengers injured when a large steel tube penetrated the vehicle. The tube broke the rear window and hit Shen, 40.

Three of the four injured passengers, including a pregnant woman, have left hospital.

One is still receiving treatment.

There were 17 people on the bus at the time of the accident.

Shen's husband was driving when the accident happened, Huhai Bus Route officials said.

The family has received 50,000 yuan (US$7,365) from the tubes owner, a petrochemical company.

A company manager surnamed Wu told a local newspaper that each tube weighed 3 tons and was more than 10 meters long.

The total weight of 36 tons far exceeded the truck's load limited of 12 tons.

Puxing Highway saw another accident yesterday when five vehicles were involved in a collision about 10am.

The accident began after a truck crashed into the vehicle in front.
