Cruise ship comfort for commuters
THE kind of toilets used on planes and cruise ships are to be installed at some Metro stations.
Shentong Group, the Metro operator, said the city's busiest station at the People's Square was being fitted with vacuum toilets for use from early next month.
The station, which is shared by Lines 1, 2 and 8, has an insufficient number of toilets for the number of its commuters. Vacuum toilets save on water and are easy to install and maintain, said the Metro operator.
If they prove suitable and are welcomed by users, the Metro authority will introduce them on other Line 1 stations.
Most stations on Line 1 either don't have toilets or only have a small number in service because such facilities weren't included in the initial designs. Adding toilets on platforms are among the efforts the Metro operators are making to refurbish Line 1 in preparation for the 2010 World Expo.
Metro officials said they had completed renovating the ventilation system at Shanghai Indoor Stadium station yesterday.
When World Expo starts in next May, the city will have 11 Metro lines and 2,500 trains in operation.
