Damaged road riles local bus company

A BUS company has had so many vehicles damaged due to potholes and depressions along a stretch of Huzhuang Road, Jiading District, that he has contacted the media for help after officials only paid lip service to the problem.

The latest incident was yesterday when a No. 121 bus hit a large pothole on the road, shattering one of the vehicle's windows. No one was injured.

Chen Qiang, a manager at No. 4 Bashi Bus Co, blamed construction vehicles for damaging the road, and complained that its dreadful condition had already caused 20 flat tires, six shattered windows while also damaging the undercarriage of one bus in the past two months.

"The damaged road has caused great economic losses to our company, but it has also placed our passengers in danger," Chen said.

One passenger sprained his ankle several weeks ago when a bus hit a pothole. The driver had to pay him about 1,000 yuan (US$146.2) for his injury, according to Chen.

An official surnamed Gu with the Jiading Construction Office said workers had been sent to inspect the road yesterday.
