Dapu Road 'Old Timer' To Undergo Facelift

THE Dapu Road Tunnel will be shut on Saturday as it underwent roadway expansion, reinforcement and decorations, the Shanghai Engineering Administration said yesterday.

Though still safe for motorists, the tunnel was showing signs of wear after nearly 40 years in service, Shang Guoping, an official with the administration, said.

Construction of the tunnel took six years in the late 1960s when the country was undergoing economic difficulties. It was opened in 1971 but only allowed thoroughfare to military vehicles and local vehicles with special permits, such as passenger buses and government cars. It opened for unrestricted traffic in 1990.

Shang said engineers had found some steel bars in the old tunnel had serious rust problems and potholes. It also suffered from a poor ventilation system, causing widespread complaint over exhaust fumes.

After the revamp due to be completed in early next February, the tunnel will have refurbished lighting, drainage and ventilation systems as well as more modern decorations. The builder will also widen the roadway.
