Dapu Road Tunnel closes for renovations

THE Dapu Road Tunnel, the city's oldest passage under the Huangpu River, will be closed to traffic next month for renovations after 38 years in service.

Cross-river traffic from Shanghai's Xuhui District in Puxi to Shangnan area in Pudong will be affected.
The tunnel is expected to reopen next March, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

More than 10 public bus routes using the tunnel will have to change their routes. Some will use the Lupu Bridge as an alternative. The traffic authority will publish details of the new routes, the report said.

Some commuters may use the second phase of Metro Line 8 which will start early next month, with the new phase connecting Shangnan and downtown Puxi.

Meanwhile, a second section for the Dapu Road Tunnel is expected to be completed by the end of the year, the Shanghai Morning Post reported.

The 1.5-billion-yuan (US$219 million) project will double the tunnel's capacity.
It is a key part of the city's 2010 World Expo traffic infrastructure.

The last renovations on the Dapu Road Tunnel were in 2004.
