Demolished houses to be reconstructed

A ROW of arcade houses, or qilou, in Huangpu District will be demolished to make way for a Metro station.
The demolished houses however will be reconstructed later at the same site, the district government said yesterday.
The historic arcade houses on Jinling Road with a history dating back to 1920s will be reconstructed to its original look, and their spatial form will not be changed once the Metro station is completed, officials said.
The height and width of the houses will be kept the same.
Initial plans were to demolish the buildings but there was a rethink after appeals by residents and property experts.
The site of the demolished houses will serve as the entrance and ventilation facilities of the Dashijie station of Metro Line 14.
