Dense fog halts ferries

DENSE fog enveloped Shanghai last night and this morning, halting all ferries in the city for the first time this year.

Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued a yellow fog alert, the lowest of the three-level system, at 5:40am. The alert increased to orange, the second highest, at 7:20am, with authorities pegging visibility at less than 200 meters in most of the city.

The east and north parts of the city suffered the most, with visibility in Chongming County and Pudong International Airport under 150 and 250 meters, the bureau said.

Shanghai maritime authorities, for the first time this year, reported the shutdown of ferry services across the Huangpu River.

All 18 ferry routes in at least four districts were closed from 4am. Services gradually resumed at 8:45am but one route in Minhang District did not reopen until 10:30am.

The fog alert was lifted at 9:30am when the fog was dispersing.
