Dial your phone for rail tickets

RAIL passengers will be able to book train tickets by phone starting today by using a new railway hotline.

The hotline is primarily for people living in Shanghai and neighboring Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Anhui Provinces, the Shanghai Railway Bureau said yesterday.

"It will sometimes spare passengers from queuing for a long time," said Tao Liping, a bureau official.

Passengers can order tickets by dialing 95105105, an automatic voice system, and get the tickets at nearby ticket outlets. Student tickets are not included.

The phone service runs from 7am to 10pm daily. There's a service charge of 5 yuan (73 US cents) per ticket.

One person may buy a maximum of 20 tickets via the hotline. The limit will tighten during holiday seasons, when complaints often arise about shortages of tickets.

So far no English service is available, but the bureau said it is considering it.
