Discount bonanza for visitors to Pudong
DISCOUNT coupons worth hundreds of millions of yuan are to be handed out in a bid to boost tourism in Shanghai's Pudong New Area.
The coupons, offering a total of 900 million yuan (US$132 million) in discounts, will be issued from tomorrow, and officials said the coupons could bring in 5 billion yuan of spending on tourist attractions in the district.
The coupons will be in 310,000 pamphlets to be distributed to local residents and people living in neighboring Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces.
"This is a new bid by the Pudong government to attract tourists," said Chen Zhongmao, deputy director of the Pudong Economic Commission. "We hope to help tourism companies recover from the financial crisis and remain stable."
The discounts, offering from 20 to 40 percent off, cover 12 scenic spots, 29 hotels, 32 restaurants and nine travel agencies, officials said.
The pamphlets will also serve as a tourism guide, with articles on Pudong's attractions, and the coupons can be used from May to August.
Officials said the district government issues the pamphlets at no cost to itself. Pudong's tourism companies are paying for printing and distribution and the discounts.
"If the trial proves successful, Pudong will decide on more policies to attract tourists," Chen said.
Pudong will distribute the coupons at tourism consulting centers and banks in the city and the two provinces.
The district government will also offer the coupons to credit card holders in the city and the two provinces.
