Dock to be shipshape ahead of Expo 2010

THE transformation of one of the city's oldest wharf areas and major passenger berths - the 150-year-old Shiliupu Dock - into a promenade with restaurants and shopping centers will be completed in time for the 2010 World Expo.
"We want to inject new life into this old dock site without copying other riverside construction works in Western countries," said Zhao Wenqi, vice president of the Huangpu River Bank Development Group, the major project developer which has invested more than 3 billion yuan (US$439.12 million) in the project.
The renewed dock area, south of the Bund, will be linked by an underground passageway to the Bund Area Transport Hub, which will have four bus stations and a parking area for more than 100 commuter buses.
Marina plan
The underground structures, including a parking area for 700 cars and some shopping centers, have been finished, according to the developer.
A platform 10 meters out from the bank, will run for 2 kilometers along the river.
Three buildings will house restaurants, while 52 percent of land will be landscaped.
The old passenger terminal will be turned into 12 yacht marinas.
The builder said the constructions would be more environmentally friendly since the air-conditioning system would be cooled by water from Huangpu River, which will greatly reduced noise and heat.
The project will also use solar energy and LED lighting.
"It is important to let both locals and visitors to see,feel and think about thecity's profound dock culture in the project," said Song Yiqiao, vice chairman of the Shanghai Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference.
