Dock to ease parking woes
THE shortage of parking spaces around the Bund will be greatly relieved after next March as the Shiliupu Dock compound reopens.
The Shiliupu Dock area, on the southern end of the Bund, will offer 806 parking spaces.
"Tourists arriving by private cars will be able to use the parking services at the dock compound before taking off for the Bund sightseeing area," said Huang Rong, director of Shanghai Construction Commission.
The Shiliupu Dock area, once the terminal for both island and provincial ferries, has fallen into disrepair in the past decade.
The renovation will change the dock into a cruise-ship terminal that allows 12 berths for river sightseeing ships.
The dock complex will also have a passenger waiting hall, shopping and restaurant area and parking lots on its three underground levels. The area will cover more than 68,000 square meters.
Officials said the ferry complex would be open to tourists and vehicles by December, while construction of the other underground facilities would not be completed until next March.
