Don’t be overloaded on Chenta Bridge

SHANGHAI’S tunnel construction company has begun installing sensors on bridges to catch and stop overloaded trucks in a trial operation to be promoted citywide.

Shanghai Tunnel Engineering Co has installed 181 different sensors on Chenta Bridge in Songjiang District that can weigh vehicles passing along it and monitor the structure of the bridge, the company said yesterday. An alarm would be sent to local traffic authorities once an overloaded vehicle was detected on the bridge.

The new technology is part of the city’s under-construction road and vehicle monitoring system being developed to help to relieve traffic congestion.

After its completion, local commuters might receive notices through a smartphone app every morning about traffic conditions on the roads to their workplaces, the company said.

It also unveiled a patrolling inspection robot working on underground pipes yesterday that can automatically monitor breaks or leaks in gas and water pipelines.
