Doors on the bus go round and round

BUSES with doors on both sides will be ready around the beginning of October to connect with passengers taking the No.71 bus that runs under Yan’an Elevated Road.

Chen Lin, vice general manager of Shanghai Bus Co, said yesterday that the new service would help passengers more conveniently transfer between bus lines. Currently they had to walk across Yan’an Road or an overpass to take another bus.

With doors on both sides, the new buses will open doors street-side as usual, except on Yan’an Road when picking up passengers. Then the other doors will be brought into play as there is no street-side exit on the Yan’an Road route.

The buses will be bought later this year, and a trial run will follow, Chen said.

Yang Xiaoxi, vice director of Shanghai Transportation Commission, said the commission would work closely with traffic police so that the trial bus line that connects with the No.71 won’t disrupt other traffic users.

“The No.71 bus lane is closed to other vehicles 24/7 at the moment, but we’ll adjust the rules in the future for convenience of the passengers,” Yang said.

Yang added that the commission had started to assess the effectiveness of the 71 bus line, which began operating on February 1.

The 71 line transports 42,000 passengers daily on average, and a single 18-kilometer trip takes 59 to 62 minutes, which Yang said “lives up to its design capacity.”

Meanwhile, about 80 percent of all traffic lights along the bus line had been configured to give priority to the buses, up from 40 percent when the service began, Yang added.
