Double-length trains get a run on subway Line 16
LONGER trains have been introduced on subway Line 16 in a bid to cope with rising passenger numbers, its operator said yesterday.
The usual three-carriage trains have been replaced with six-carriage versions for a trial period during weekday rush hour periods, Shanghai Shentong Metro Co said.
The trial started yesterday, but the company did not say how long it would last or if it would become a permanent fixture.
Line 16 users at Heshahangcheng and Zhoupudong stations have complained of having to wait for up to 50 minutes for a train during the morning rush hour, while queues of commuters outside the stations’ entrances have been measured at 2 kilometers long.
The subway operator said also yesterday that it will lay on more trains to cope with the inevitable spike in demand during Chunyun — the 40-day Spring Festival travel period, which starts tomorrow and runs through March 3.
Special attention will be paid to the major intersection stations and those that serve the city’s railway terminals, the company said.
More than 7 million are expected to use the subway every day during the holiday period.
