Driver watches man burn to death
A SURVEILLANCE video clip showing a man burn to death after a car hit his motorcycle while the driver was simply watching has sparked a public uproar after it was posted online.
The accident occurred on Huqingping Highway in suburban Qingpu District at 9:25pm on April 12, when a sedan hit Liu Dong's motorcycle, which then caught on fire.
Liu's lower body caught fire and he started rolling on the ground trying to put out the flames, the video showed. But the fire soon spread all over his body and the man was seen struggling to get his helmet off while the car driver, Chen Landi, kept driving until passengers in his car told him to stop, said Wang Wei, Liu's cousin.
A female passenger in Chen's tried putting out the fire with her coat, but failed as the flames increased, according to the video.
About 30 seconds later, Liu knelt down and stopped struggling while Chen appeared in the footage for the first time. Chen watched Liu burn and called someone on his cell phone, the video showed.
The fire was finally put out by the driver of another car about 3 minutes after the accident.
The man used a fire extinguisher, but Liu had already died.
City police said Liu was drunk at the time of the accident and that his motorcycle was not registered. Police ruled Liu and Chen were jointly responsible for the accident.
Chen has not been punished for the accident.
Meanwhile, Wang remains angry that Chen didn't help his brother.
"We are demanding Chen explain to us face to face why he was so cold-blooded to leave a man burning without offering a helping hand," Wang said.
He said Chen hasn't apologized to Liu's wife.
Liu's relatives posted the video and their letters on many Internet forums to seek help.
The post on Tianya.cn has attracted more than 49,000 clicks, with many people condemning the "cold-blooded driver."
