Drivers frightened by police dummies

PUDONG New Area police yesterday said that they will adjust the plan of placing police dummies in greenery areas after some drivers complained they were scared by the uniformed "cops" saluting them at night.

The dummies, made of plastic and wearing police uniforms, have been placed in greenery belts along Jiyang Road, Hulu Highway and the Pudong section of the Outer Ring Road since mid-September.

Chu Jianguo, deputy director of the Pudong traffic police detachment, said they placed 10 dummies and 25 replica police vehicles along those roads to remind drivers to follow speed limits and other traffic rules.

Drivers said the idea was "acceptable" in the daytime. However, at night some drivers said they were frightened by the saluting "black figures" and slammed on the brakes, which could lead to traffic accidents.

Chu said the plan is still being tested and was instigated after learning other provinces had tried it.

Officers said they will take drivers' suggestions into consideration. But they refused to say if they would reduce the number of dummies or remove them from the greenery belts.
