Drunk driver hits scooter

A DRUNK driver crashed his car into a scooter and a taxi within a few minutes in the Pudong New Area, fled the scene and was later found at a karaoke venue on Friday, Shanghai police said yesterday.

"When we found him in the karaoke parlor, he was totally indulging himself in singing as if nothing had happened," officers said.

Police said the 30-year-old driver, a Shanghai native surnamed Wu, has been detained for drunk driving.

A young man on the scooter was injured but has since been discharged from hospital, police added.

The incident occurred about 11pm on Friday as Wu drove a white car on Boshan Road in Pudong, first hitting a scooter. A young man on the scooter was knocked to the ground, witnesses said.

However the car kept going and crashed into a cab at a nearby intersection before fleeing the scene, police said.

The car was later spotted going into an underground parking lot at a plaza on Jinqiao Road, police said.

"It almost hit me," said a plaza security guard.

The guard added the car also ran into a cement barrier in front of the plaza before driving into the underground parking lot.

As the guards looked for the driver, they could only find the damaged white car inside the parking lot.

They called the police who later caught the suspect in a karaoke suite on the fourth floor.

Wu was taken into custody by police. The investigation is ongoing, said officers.
