Drunk driving on rise
CITY police said drunk driving cases are on the rise this month as banquets and get-togethers are increasing prior to the Spring Festival. In the Pudong New Area alone, police have caught 55 drunk drivers this month.
On Monday night, a woman passenger was killed when a car crashed and caught on fire after the driver hit a cement railing on an exit ramp of the Middle Ring Road, police said.
The driver, surnamed Chang, from Anhui Province, crawled out of the car. His blood alcohol level was later tested at 208 milligrams per 100 milliliters, which was more than double the minimum level of 80mg/ml for drunk driving.
Police said about 80 percent of the drunk drivers were caught during 7pm and 10pm amid increased road checks during the peak period of banquets and dinners.
