Drunk foreigner caught asleep at the wheel

A foreigner was detained by the police for driving while drunk, fined 1,800 yuan and banned from driving for six months at the end of July, according to the local exit-entry immigration police.

At about 1am on a July night, the man was found slumped over the steering wheel of his black Jeep stopped at the crossroad of Yan'an Road and Hongxu Road after descending from the Yan'an Elevated Road.

A passer-by saw the Jeep stopped there for a long time through several changes of lights.

When a police officer arrived and shouted at the driver through the window, the man slowly opened the door. There was an overwhelming smell of alcohol.

His blood alcohol level was later found to be 1.93 milligrams per milliliter, almost two-and-half times the legal limit of 0.8mg/ml.

The man said he had drunk more than four liters of beer with his friends at his birthday party before he drove back home alone that night.

He said he regretted the incident and that it was lucky he fell asleep while stopped at the lights instead of while driving.
