Dry spell ahead after recent rain ... but pollution returning too

POLLUTION is set to return today as recent wet weather gives way to high pressure bringing dry and cloudy conditions.
More than 40 millimeters of rain on Tuesday and yesterday brought some respite from recent air pollution which had reached severely polluted on Sunday.
But while yesterday’s air quality was “perfect,” light smog will return this afternoon, said the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.
Tiny PM2.5 particles, especially harmful as they can get deep into the respiratory system, will be the main pollutant.
A weak cold front is set to arrive over the city on Saturday, bringing with it pollutants from the north, said officials.
This is set to persist through Monday.
Today and tomorrow will be cloudy with temperatures of 4 to 12 degrees Celsius, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
The arrival of cold air on Saturday will see the high drop to 7 degrees, then climb to 11 degrees again on Sunday, when cloud and sunny spells are forecast.
Monday should by sunny with a high of 13 degrees.
A day of steady rain made for treacherous conditions on city roads yesterday, with three people killed in accidents during morning rush hour.
In Xuhui District, a truck struck two pedestrians near the intersection of Hongcao Road S. and Humin Road. They were pronounced dead in hospital.
And in the Pudong New Area, a truck hit a moped at the intersection of Zhangyang Road N. and Dongjiang Branch Road, killing the female rider.
Warmer start
The city has seen a warmer start to the new year than in 2014.
Bureau data showed the average temperature of early January was 6.4 degrees Celsius — 1.1 degrees higher than 2014’s average of 5.3 degrees.
Some residents have said the warmer weather is responsible for the heavier pollution. But the bureau said the smog was mostly down to the still conditions.
