Early morning chaos as People鈥檚 Square Station shut for repair works

METRO lines 1 and 8 on the People’s Square Metro Station was closed for repairs today, resulting in traffic chaos.
Normal operation will resume on February 11.
People’s Square Station is the busiest Metro network, linking lines 1, 2 and 8.
During renovation, trains from lines 1 and 8 will not stop at the station. Line 2 passengers can still access the station.
“I left home 20 minutes earlier than usual,” a local resident surnamed Shen told Shanghai Daily. Shen works in Lujiazui area and lives in Baoshan District. She used to take Line 1 and transfer to Line 2 at People’s Square.
“I took a detour today. Taking Line 1 to Hanzhong Road Station first to transfer to Line 12, and then go to Nanjing Road W. Station for Line 2.”
Despite the extra time in commuting and congestion, Shen believes it will get better with the coming of the Spring Festival holiday.
“I think there will be fewer people in the following days,” she said.
According to the Metro operator, there was a big increase in traffic at Hanzhong Road station. Stations connected to lines 1 and 8 are making bilingual broadcast to remind people of the renovation work at People’s Square Station.
However, there were still commuters who were taken by surprise.
Feng Yue was surprised when her Line 8 train did not stop at People’s Square as usual. She got off at the next station on Qufu Road and decided to walk to her office in People’s Square.
Workers will work around the clock in three shifts to minimize the impact on commuters, the Metro operator said.
Another two stations will be suspended network operation for renovation soon.
Shanghai Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park Station on Line 2 will suspend operation from January 21 to February 10 and Shendu Highway Station on Line 8 will be closed from January 25 to February 8.
