Electricity upgrades for 3m residents

ELECTRICITY meters, fuseboxes and cables in some 6,500 old residential neighborhoods are being replaced to reduce power cuts.

Covering more than 3 million households, the work is set to be complete by 2017, said the Shanghai Electric Power Co yesterday.

Equipment to be replaced is found in communal areas in buildings mostly built before 2000. Many fail to meet standards and suffer more frequent malfunctions.

The “Light Project” includes private and public housing, with the cost met by the city and district governments, said Liu Haisheng, director of the Shanghai Housing Management Bureau.

Capacity will also be upgraded to 8 kilowatts.

The work covering 300,000 households should be complete this year.
