Expo taxis to be taken off Shanghai's streets
MORE than 300 hybrid World Expo taxis are expected to be taken out of service after the event due to their high cost and higher maintenance fees, Shanghai's traffic authorities said yesterday.
The other 3,650 cabs will remain in service, only with new livery, said the Shanghai Transport and Port Administration Bureau.
The bureau is also asking the public about the new colors of the cabs.
The 350 Buick LaCrosse Hybrids will be removed and the 3,650 Volkswagen Tourans will be turned over to the city's five major taxi companies.
Shanghai Bashi Taxi Co, the company which owns the hybrid cabs, said it is still deciding on the future use of the cars. The vehicles cost more than 200,000 yuan (US$30,040) each.
The hybrids save about 15 percent of petrol and reduce about 15 percent of emissions, compared with normal taxis.
Traffic officials said there are three plans for repainting, two with the company colors - the other is to keep the current color and design.
For now the cabs have designs of local landmarks and pavilions inside the Expo.
The cabs have been in short supply as the Expo visitor numbers soared.
