Extra trains for midnight passengers
HOLIDAY travellers returning on “red eye” trains needn’t worry about missing the last Metro service.
To cope with the big influx of people heading back to the city, the Metro service has extended the operating hours of Line 2 for those arriving at Hongqiao Railway Station at midnight.
Seven or eight extra Metro trains will depart from the station after the scheduled timetable during the travel rush, Shanghai Television Station reported yesterday.
The extended service will continue until after the Lantern Festival, which falls on Monday this year.
To make the additional trains possible, the Metro operator has temporarily reduced the number of hours allocated for maintenance.
The final extra Metro Line 2 train left Hongqiao Railway Station at 12:30am yesterday. The operation normally ends at 10:48pm.
Daily traffic through Hongqiao Railway Station’s Metro Line 2 stop exceeded 200,000 people over the past few days.
Traffic through the Metro station is at its busiest at noon and after 9pm, when about 60 trains arrive at the railway station, the TV station said.
Service on 30 bus routes serving the city’s major transportation hubs has been extended until March 3.
