Face-lift for Park Hotel

THE Park Hotel, the highest building in Asia when it was built in 1934, has started restoring and repairing its exterior granite walls. The project is expected to last at least to the end of the year, hotel officials said today.

"The granite wall was weathered gradually over the past few decades," said hotel general manager Zhu Peiji.

Most of the granite will be polished and defective parts will be repaired or replaced, while the hotel will remain open.

e . Those which having been broken seriously will be replaced by new stones, officials said.

The hotel will operate normally during the restoration.

The Shanghai Cultural Relic Administrative Committee said it approved the project in September. Officials confirmed that the restoration will keep the original historical appearance.
