Fairer for now, but sleet on the way

FAIRER weather should return to the city today and tomorrow after almost a week of snow, sleet, rain and, latterly, fog, forecasters said.

Skies should be cloudy to sunny from today to Wednesday morning with low temperatures of minus one to zero degrees Celsius and highs of about 4-6 degrees, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau yesterday.

But sleet has been forecast for Thursday and Friday.

Shanghai was covered in light fog yesterday due to humidity brought by rain, said Zhu Jiehua, a chief service officer of the bureau.

"The rain was caused by the northern movement of a rain zone in southern China, which moved further than expected," Zhu explained.

Visibility was limited to 1,000 meters but no traffic congestion related to the fog was reported. The low was a little higher than the previous days, at 2 degrees.

Today is forecast cloudy to sunny with a low of zero and the high at 4 degrees. Tomorrow should be cloudy, with the mercury dropping to one below zero tomorrow, and a high of 6 degrees.

Meanwhile, officials said that this month the city has been much colder than usual.

Shanghai's average January temperature, so far, has been 1.7 degrees Celsius while on an average year the figure is 4.3 degrees.
