Fast-track security for tardy air travelers
LATECOMERS at the city's Hongqiao International Airport can take fast-track security checks so they don't miss their flights during the Spring Festival rush, airport officials said.
Hongqiao airport, which handles most of Shanghai's domestic flights, is seeing its first Spring Festival rush since a new terminal opened last March.
The airport expects to handle more than 80,000 passengers a day during the peak in the holiday season, Shanghai Airport Authority said yesterday.
A "fast pass" will be provided for late passengers, but they must be accompanied by airline staff and the practice is "not encouraged," said the operator.
Security checks at the city's two airports, Hongqiao and Pudong International Airport, will not been raised in the wake of Monday's terrorist attack at an airport in Moscow, airport and regional aviation authorities said. "Safety, however, is always our top priority," said Jin Dexiong, spokesman for the Hongqiao airport.
While passengers wearing coats and boots will be required to remove them during checks, they need not take off belts, said the operator.
Meanwhile, local airports have been making preparations for delays during the holiday season. To make any long delays less painful, passengers held up at Hongqiao airport due to bad weather will be given discounts at some restaurants, the operator said.
The airport added that it would coordinate with the Metro operator should extra trains be required for the late arrival of passengers delayed elsewhere.
Traffic authorities have already added extra services on Metro Line 2 to carry late-night air or rail travelers to and from Hongqiao transport hub. Travelers can catch extra subway trains both at Hongqiao railway station and Hongqiao airport Terminal 2 station.
The last Metro Line 2 train will leave Hongqiao railway station at 11:20pm, while Hongqiao airport T2 will see the last departure at 11:22pm.
