Feeling hot, hot, hot
THE ongoing heat wave is forecast to bake the city until at least next Monday, meteorologists said yesterday.
According to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, the high should reach at least 36 degrees Celsius for the next five days, meaning the city could have 10 straight high-temperature days in which the mercury hits 35 degrees or above.
The high yesterday was 37.1 degrees, making it the hottest day this year. It caused the bureau to issue the year's second orange heat alert.
The temperature is expected to reach 38 degrees today, the bureau said. Although it will turn cloudy and there could be some afternoon thundershowers beginning tomorrow, the temperature is still likely to remain above 35 degrees, forecasters said.
The heat led to a surge in power consumption as air conditioners were used more frequently. The city's power load reached 24,263 megawatts on Monday, the year's high.
