Ferry bus service along Huangpu ends next month following poor response

AFTER three months of trial run, the ferry bus service along the Huangpu River will end on April 1, the city's transport commission said on Tuesday.

The ferry service was being tested from December 17 in the hope that it would cut down road traffic congestion.

However, it did not attract commuters as expected. Till February 19, the service had 514 runs and ferried a total of 4,152 people, including 1,180 who traveled for free. Each run, which had a maximum capacity of 500 passengers, carried only about 9 passengers on average.

The commission said on an average there were less than 2 passengers on the ferry. It said the situation did not improve even after it altered the bus routes near the ferry stations. It was then decided to end the service to stop wasting public resources and reduce pollution.
