Ferry firm stays confident despite competition

A FERRY company is feeling confident about its business despite the opening of the Shanghai Changjiang tunnel-bridge due on October 31.

According to officials from the Shanghai Yatong Co. Ltd, the only ferry firm on Chongming Island, it has an advantage over the tunnel-bridge in traveling time.

"We plan to get the city's bus company to add shuttles between the Shidongkou Passenger Dock in Baoshan District and Metro Line 1 to make the journey from downtown to Chongming Island in one to 1 1/2 hours," said Fan Benxiao, deputy manager of Yatong.

A ride in smooth traffic from Pudong to Chongming via the tunnel-bridge is expected to take about 30 minutes, not including travel time downtown, which may add up to a total 1 1/2 hours, according to the ferry company.

Fast ferries leaving Baoshan District take only about 40 minutes to reach Chongming Island.

"It will probably take more time via the tunnel-bridge, allowing for crowded roads and traffic jams," Fan said.

Ticket prices for passengers traveling to Chongming by ferry range from 10 yuan (US$1.46) to 50 yuan, depending on speed.

Many passengers choose to buy a 23-yuan ticket for a ride of about 40 minutes. This compares with a 12-yuan fare for buses through the tunnel-bridge.

Private car drivers will have to pay a total toll fee of 50 yuan to travel via the tunnel-bridge.

"I have taken the ferry to reach my home on Chongming Island for the past four years," said Mao Hui, a 21-year-old college student.

"The new tunnel-bridge sounds great but I still prefer the ferry."
