Ferry routes will open soon

SHANGHAI will open ferry routes in the next two months tailored to those working in the Pudong New Area and several districts on the other side of the Huangpu River, the city's transport watchdog said yesterday.

It's the latest effort to relieve soaring road and Metro traffic congestion during rush hours.

"Water shuttle" routes will open on a downtown stretch of the Huangpu River, said Sun Jianping, head of the city's transport and port administration bureau.

Docks downtown were revamped and expanded prior to the World Expo last year so the infrastructure is already in place for the ferries.

One route will link the Lujiazui financial zone in Pudong to Hongkou and Yangpu districts.

The northeastern districts are across the Huangpu River from Lujiazui.

"It will only take about 20 minutes to travel by ferry from Yangpu District to Lujiazui," Sun said.

Residents in Yangpu and Hongkou have long complained about overcrowded subway trains, buses and traffic congestion.

Sun said the docks for the new ferry routes are close to Metro stations and supported by bus services. More routes may also be added, Sun said.
