Festival frolics!
A parade of floats raised the curtain on this year's Shanghai Tourism Festival last night with almost 500,000 people lining Huaihai Road to cheer on the colorful procession.
A total of 22 floats and 36 groups of performers from all over the world took part in the parade which lasted for oneand- a-half hours in a journey that was more than 4 kilometers long.
Dancers and musicians from many nations put on displays of the folk music, songs and dances of their countries, among them Portuguese country dancing, Scottish drumming and dances of the ethnic minorities.
The festival will last until October 6. It has more than 40 events, including the Shanghai Food Festival and the Shanghai International Musical Fireworks Festival. The festival will also be heaven for shoppers with stores on Huaihai Road, Nanjing Road and the Xujiahui area extending their opening hours to midnight during the National Day holiday to mark the festival.
