Firm may dig deep for Bund parking solution
THE shortage of parking spaces around the Bund may soon be eased. A city construction firm is exploring the idea of using advanced technology to create underground parking.
Jiang Zhiquan, chairman of the Shanghai Construction Group, said the company planned to improve a new technology this year that might be used to create underground parking lots in the near future.
The technology has been used for constructing some Metro stations in Shanghai, he said, and can excavate safely in narrow spaces.
The Bund is home to a large number of historic buildings including many under national protection.
"The huge number of vehicles flowing into the area every day suffer from a great shortage of parking spaces," said a senior Huangpu District police officer. He said at least 17,000 more car spaces were needed in the area.
