First hot spell of the year is on its way

THE first really hot spell of the year is expected to hit the city very soon. High temperatures may reach 31 to 33 degrees Celsius in the next four to six days, which will be sunny, weathermen said yesterday.

Maximum temperatures today and tomorrow will be between 27 and 29 degrees, and the highs will rise to over 30 degrees from Friday. The lows will be between 17 and 19 degrees, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

According to the Chinese lunar calendar, yesterday was the first day of summer. According to the meteorological definition, summer comes when the daily average temperature rises over 22 degrees for five straight days. Usually the city steps into summer in the last 10 days of May.

According to Chinese customs, during this time parents often put a boiled egg into a net and hang it around a child's neck to bring good health during the summer.
