First stage of gas pipe project nears completion

THE gas pipeline linking Shanghai and the southwestern China province of Sichuan is expected to have its first stage completed on Thursday.

The whole project will be completed during the Shanghai World Expo next year and will go into use at the same time.

Approved by China's cabinet, the State Council, the west-to-east natural gas transmission project will have an annual capacity of 12 billion cubic meters or 17 billion cubic meters for pressurized gas, to help relieve Shanghai's tight gas supplies.

The 1,702-kilometer pipeline starts at the Puguang Gas Field in Sichuan and reaches Shanghai through Chongqing Municipality and the provinces of Hubei, Anhui, Zhejiang and Jiangsu.

The Shanghai section has two phases and the first phase – a 14.1-kilometer pipeline connecting the end of the urban gas network in Qingpu District to a gas pressure regulating station on the trunk line in Songjiang District - is nearly completed.

The second stage – a 34-kilometer pipeline – will start at the station in Songjiang's Tahui Town and will run to the district's Chedun Town. Construction will begin at the end of June.
