Five killed as car bursts into flames

Five people died and one was injured in a fireball when a truck and a car collided on a city expressway yesterday evening.

The accident happened about 7:35pm on Shenhai Expressway, or G15, in the city's Jiading District, near a ramp leading towards another expressway to downtown. Both vehicles were traveling south.

The truck hit the rear of the car in which six people were traveling, a witness said.

The car caught fire and its passengers were unable to escape, said the witness, who believed that the truck hit the car's fuel tank.

The truck driver dragged one passenger out of the vehicle, but was unable to help the other occupants due to the ferocity of the flames, the witness said.

The police cordoned off the ramp for more than an hour and are investigating the accident.

In an earlier incident, foreign tourists were among more than 10 passengers injured after their bus crashed into barriers on an elevated road in wet conditions yesterday afternoon.

The conductor and an elderly woman were seriously injured but are now in a stable condition after the accident on the G50 outside the Outer Ring Road.

Yesterday's wet conditions also contributed to several other road accidents.

Two people were injured in a seven-vehicle collision on the Middle Ring Road, while four vehicles were involved in an accident on Yan'an Elevated Road. There were no injuries.
