Flight canceled after oil found on wing

OIL was spotted on a wing of a United Airlines Boeing 747 aircraft at the Pudong International Airport yesterday and the flight was canceled shortly before it was due to take off for San Francisco.

The airline said the flight will depart today.

Two fire trucks were dispatched to the runway to clean the oil, according to the Shanghai Airport Authority.

Flight UA858 was due to take off at 12:10pm but the flight was delayed. The oil was spotted at 1:40pm. Passengers on board were asked to disembark and the wide-body plane was towed away for repairs.

The airline said since it has no backup aircraft in Shanghai, the passengers had to wait until today.

Such oil leakages are usually due to a problem with the hydraulic pressure system on the wing, which takes time to repair, according to a senior mechanic with China Eastern Airlines.

It was the second recent oil leak incident at the Pudong airport.

Last Thursday, oil was found on the undercarriage of an Asiana Airlines aircraft. More than 250 passengers on board were also asked to disembark the Airbus A330-300 plane. Flight OZ362 from Pudong to Incheon, South Korea, was delayed for more than six hours.
