Flights affected but no respite from rains

RAINS played havoc with flights yesterday with weather forecasters saying that the deluge is likely to continue today.

The expected rush at tourist venues during the three-day Qingming holiday also did not happen with people locking themselves in because of the wet weather.

The downpour hit the city on Sunday evening, when the first yellow lightning alert was issued at 8pm. The rough weather forced the cancellation of about 70 flights yesterday and delayed over 160 others at Shanghai’s two airports.

Flights started to be affected at the Hongqiao International Airport at 10pm on Sunday as thunderstorms lashed the city.

Over 34 flights were either canceled, delayed for over 2 hours or diverted to Pudong or nearby airports.

There were long lines of empty cabs at Hongqiao airport. A taxi driver told Shanghai Television that he waited for about three hours to get a passenger while on normal days it usually waits for around 90 minutes.

While it will be wet today, the mercury is expected to gradually rise from tomorrow to a high of 18 degrees Celsius on Saturday, forecasters said. It is likely to remain cloudy for several days.

Between 8pm on Sunday and 8am yesterday, the benchmark Xujiahui weather station recorded 29.5 millimeters of rain. Suburban Jinshan District recorded the maximum rainfall of 46 millimeters.

The lowest temperature was 11.2 degrees yesterday as recorded by Xujiahui station, with Chongming County recording 9.8 degrees, the lowest among all suburban districts and county.

The meeting of cold and warm air in Jiangnan, or the southern region of the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, led to heavy rains. The influence of cold air mass brought down the temperature, said Man Liping, a chief service officer at the bureau.

The lowest temperature today will be 6 degrees Celsius and the high is forecasted to be 10 degrees while the air quality should be excellent. The sky will clear up tomorrow, and the temperature should hover between 7 and 13 degrees.

On Thursday, it should be cloudy to overcast with temperatures between 9 and 14 degrees. On Friday, the mercury will be between 10 and 17 degrees.

The rains kept the tourists away despite the three-day Qingming Festival holiday. All the major tourists spots like the Shanghai Wildlife Park, Jinjiang Amusement Park and Happy Valley reported a sharp fall in visitors. The Gucun Park with its cherry blossoms barely received 9,746 tourists yesterday.
