Flights canceled, streets flooded as morning downpours hit city

Some 40 flights were cancelled and over 100 were delayed at Shanghai's two airports this morning due to heavy rainstorm and lightning that also flooded some roads within the city.

By 11am, a total of 46 flights to Beijing, Guangzhou and other Chinese cities were canceled at Hongqiao International Airport, which was affected more severely than Pudong International Airport, where 60 flights were delayed.

Most flights between Shanghai and Beijing, the busiest flight route at the city's airports, were delayed or canceled since last night because of the weather or air traffic controls.

The city's weather authority issued a rainstorm yellow alert, the third-highest, about 7am as over 30 monitoring stations around the city witnessed heavy rainfalls of 50 millimeters per hour. The downpours came in the city's downtown Xuhui, Putuo and Changning districts, Pudong New Area and suburban Qingpu, Minhang and Jiading districts.

By 9am, many major roads in Pudong and Jiading were flooded. The meteorological bureau of Pudong upgraded its rain alert to orange at 9:30am.

Weather forecasters said showers, lightning and rainstorms will continue to hit the city through today, with some regions enduring more heavy rainfall. The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau released the alert for lightning about 10:30am.

Temperatures will be around 24 to 26 degrees Celsius today, cooler than yesterday. The mercury is forecast to rise quickly to about 35 degrees starting tomorrow, with subtropical high pressure coming to the city as the rain ends.
